A three-quarter studio portrait on white is taken to an even high key, with the shadow detail in the black wardrobe recovered first.

Project overview
Black wardrobe on a white background is the hardest exposure in the studio: lifting the background clips the shadow detail in the black, and protecting the black leaves the background grey.
Transformation details
Background and subject were treated as two separate exposures and brought together at the end, rather than balanced as one.
Detail in the black wardrobe was recovered in the shadows before the background was lifted at all.
The white was then evened out to the frame edges with the subject masked.
The skin kept its warmth when it was evened, so it holds against a pure white background.
